What You Need To Know About Gut Health & Immunity

All disease begins in the gut, a quote attributed to the ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates, nearly 2500 years ago. Well, he wasn't far off. Every time we eat, drink, or expose ourselves to chemicals and hormones, we either are feeding disease or fighting it.

In this video, we're going to discuss the link between gut health and immunity and why the healthy immune system starts in the gut.

Would you like to have a resilient immune system? Most people are told that they need to boost their immune system but they have no idea where to start. Hippocrates told us many years ago, we have to start in the gut.

People are told to take supplements or eat this or that food. But it's difficult to boost your immune system if your gut is not healthy. We know about 70% of our immune system is located in our gut.

When we combine this with almost 40 trillion microbes-- we call the gut microbiome-- we can start to understand the importance of a healthy gut. You see these 40 trillion microbes and their massive amount of DNA interact with our own cells particularly our immune cells.

The interaction influences our immune cells to either accept things coming down the GI tract as either friendly and helpful or foreign and dangerous. These can be things like partly digested food particles, other bacteria, viruses, and a number of things.  Add to the mix that we may have pre-existing gut conditions that can be harming our immune system like gut infections, bacterial and yeast overgrowth known as SIBO, H. pylori, parasites, and dysbiosis like leaky gut.

Unfortunately, conventional medicine often misses these factors and many times prescribes medication like acid blockers, antibiotics, and steroids. Diet changes, exercise, and sleep are often not mentioned at all. So when it comes to understanding the immune system, gut education is the key and it starts with testing.

In our practice, we use comprehensive stool tests and food and environmental sensitivity testing. These advanced tests often uncover the root cause of many chronic illnesses and may help find ways to heal the gut and optimize the immune system.
