Gut Health and Anxiety (PLUS How Gut Rules Your Mood)

When it comes to feeling anxious, depressed or not being able to get a good nights sleep, the most common treatment is usually an antidepressant prescription accompanied by a sleeping pill. While these meds may be effective in the short term, the root of the problem usually lies much deeper.
As a functional/holistic doc, I know that depression, anxiety, and sleepless nights are just symptoms of a deeper underlying malfunction- usually related to a poor immunity as a result of a sick gut.
For example, studies have shown that the gut microbiome (normal flora) can influence neural development, brain chemistry & nearly all behaviors, including emotions, pain perception & how the stress system responds!
In fact, nearly 80-90% of our happy hormone storage of serotonin is in the gut. Serotonin is the "happy neurotransmitter," & this is the exact hormone targeted with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Prozac or Lexapro.
Serotonin goes on to convert over to melatonin, the hormone responsible for deep well-rested sleep & has shown to have anti-cancer benefit in studies as well.
It also lends towards hormonal abnormalities, which is problematic on top of everything else as hormones shape your personality, reactions & thoughts. The gut is also in intimate communication with the brain, liver, adrenals, sex hormones, thyroid, & immune system.
